Mumbai authorities took at least 20 individuals into custody on Sunday during a candlelight vigil at Chaityabhoomi. The demonstration sought a formal investigation into the death of Sahil Wakode, an IIT-Bombay student discovered deceased in his hostel room on September 18. Wakode’s relatives have claimed he was subjected to caste-based prejudice at the educational institution. Participants at the protest accused law enforcement of employing excessive force and mistreating women during the removal process. Police officials stated the assembly lacked the necessary authorization but declined to address the specific allegations of misconduct. Among those briefly detained and subsequently released later that evening was comedian Masoom Rajwani.
