İsmail Özdemir, a senior figure within Turkey’s Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), has publicly declared that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will be the party's choice for the 2028 presidential election. Speaking at a provincial congress in Kayseri, Özdemir confirmed the party's support for the incumbent leader despite existing constitutional restrictions. Current Turkish law limits a president to two five-year terms, a threshold Erdoğan reached following his victories in 2018 and 2023. While the MHP official asserted that the upcoming general election would feature Erdoğan as their candidate, he provided no details regarding how the administration intends to circumvent the constitutional term limit. Under current regulations, a parliamentary decision to trigger early elections would be necessary for the president to seek an additional term in office.
