South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has officially appointed Kim Ji-yong as the first director of the newly established Serious Crimes Investigation Agency. This decision concludes a two-week leadership vacancy following the agency's recent inauguration. Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung confirmed that the appointment was finalized 38 days after Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung initially proposed Kim for the position. The delay in confirmation was attributed to President Lee's request for further background checks. This additional scrutiny was prompted by concerns from influential members of the ruling political coalition, who expressed apprehension that Kim's historical associations with former President Yoon Suk Yeol might compromise the integrity and independence of the new investigative body.
