A recent statewide shutdown in Punjab highlights the persistent campaign for the release of Sikh prisoners incarcerated for their roles in militancy during the 1980s and 1990s. Known as Bandi Singhs, these individuals are currently serving lengthy sentences, including life terms, across various Indian jails. The protest was organized by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha, an advocacy group that has campaigned for decades regarding this issue. Central to the current agitation are figures such as Jagtar Singh Hawara and Balwant Singh Rajoana, both linked to the Babbar Khalsa militant organization. These men were convicted for their involvement in the 1995 assassination of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh and a subsequent bombing at the Punjab Civil Secretariat. The movement continues to gain political momentum as supporters push for the release of those convicted during the period of regional unrest.
