The 46th World Chess Olympiad is scheduled to begin in Samarkand on September 15, marking the first time Central Asia has hosted this prestigious international team event. A record-breaking 400 teams from across the globe will participate in both the open and women’s categories. The tournament features an 11-round format, with the United States, India, Uzbekistan, and China entering as the top-seeded contenders for the gold medal. Uzbekistan’s national team, led by high-ranking players like Javokhir Sindarov and Nodirbek Abdusattorov, aims to defend its competitive standing on home soil. Alongside the main competition, Samarkand will host the FIDE Congress and a specialized Olympiad for players with disabilities. The event concludes on September 27 after nearly two weeks of matches, establishing the city as a temporary global hub for the chess community.
