Singapore is set to implement a revised Primary 1 registration system by 2027, designed to improve access to highly sought-after primary schools. However, the policy has triggered parliamentary scrutiny regarding its potential consequences for local families and the effectiveness of its social integration goals. During a recent session, Member of Parliament Gho Sze Kee highlighted significant anxiety among parents in Mountbatten, where the local school, Kong Hwa School, frequently faces high demand. Concerns were raised that the new two-track Phase 2C scheme, which includes several prominent institutions, might disadvantage children living in close proximity to their neighborhood schools. Lawmakers are now questioning whether these adjustments will truly foster social mixing or inadvertently create new logistical challenges for residents who rely on nearby educational facilities.
