Central Asia is grappling with an intensifying water crisis as regional freshwater supplies dwindle. According to reports from the World Meteorological Organization, river discharge levels have dropped significantly across Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, the Kyrgyz Republic, and Afghanistan. The Aral Sea basin has been particularly affected, with recent years marking some of the driest conditions recorded since 1991. Furthermore, the rapid melting of glaciers remains a critical concern, as the region’s glacier mass balance has reached one of the lowest levels observed in recent history. These environmental shifts are placing unprecedented strain on reservoir inflows and overall water security throughout the territory, highlighting a deepening challenge for the nations that rely on these vital natural resources.
