Sri Lankan law enforcement has issued an official advisory cautioning merchants and service providers against a rising trend of digital payment fraud. Perpetrators are utilizing artificial intelligence and photo editing software to generate counterfeit transaction receipts, which are then transmitted via messaging platforms like WhatsApp or Messenger. These fraudulent documents often mimic legitimate bank records by displaying precise transaction times, account details, and payment amounts. By creating a false sense of urgency, scammers attempt to coerce vendors into releasing products or completing services before the funds are verified. To mitigate these risks, police are advising businesses to exercise extreme caution and strictly verify that payments have successfully cleared in their bank accounts prior to finalizing any transactions or handing over goods.
