The Court of Appeal in Sri Lanka has granted a writ order prohibiting the detention or arrest of former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles and staff members associated with Ceylon Newspapers (Pvt) Ltd. This legal intervention follows a petition submitted by the media organization, which oversees the Mawbima and Ceylon Today publications. The conflict stems from a commercial disagreement involving post-dated cheques provided during a paper procurement deal with L.P.L. Kesara Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. After Kesara Lanka filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department, the case was brought before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court. The petitioners maintain that the underlying issue is strictly a civil matter rather than a criminal one, prompting the appellate bench of Justices Shashi Mahendran and Pradeep Hettiarachchi to issue the protective order.
