The Supreme Court has issued an interim directive prohibiting the unlawful detention of individuals engaged in peaceful demonstrations. The bench, comprised of Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, emphasized that any detentions must strictly adhere to legal procedures. Furthermore, the court mandated that metro and railway operations in Delhi continue without disruption and that internet services remain functional as per existing regulations. The order also guarantees the free movement of traffic and citizens, while explicitly stating that legal professionals must not be hindered from performing their duties. These judicial instructions follow petitions filed regarding police conduct during recent protests calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Legal representatives had previously argued that authorities were detaining individuals outside of designated restricted zones, prompting the court to intervene to protect civil liberties and maintain public infrastructure functionality.
