Sweden has undergone a significant policy reversal, moving from its long-standing reputation as a welcoming sanctuary for refugees to enforcing some of the most rigorous migration regulations in Europe. This transition occurred rapidly over the last ten years, largely triggered by the 2015 migration crisis. During that period, the nation processed over 160,000 asylum requests, representing more than 12% of the European Union's total intake, including a substantial number of unaccompanied minors. The immense pressure placed on national infrastructure during this surge altered the domestic political landscape. Consequently, Swedish authorities reached a cross-party consensus to tighten asylum criteria and family reunification laws, while also initiating temporary border checks to manage the influx of arrivals.
