At the Taiwan Marine Tech and Unmanned Robotics Expo in Tainan, domestic and international manufacturers showcased maritime drone technology to secure government contracts. Faced with rising military pressure from China, Taiwan is significantly increasing its investment in uncrewed aerial and surface vehicles. The military aims to bolster its defense capabilities by acquiring a vast fleet of technology, including over 1,400 surveillance drones, 200,000 coastal attack drones, and 1,320 kamikaze-style uncrewed surface vessels. This strategic shift reflects the growing importance of drone warfare, as demonstrated by recent global conflicts in Ukraine and the Strait of Hormuz. By fostering a local industry for these systems, Taiwan seeks to enhance its deterrence posture through rapid technological advancement and large-scale procurement of autonomous maritime assets.
