Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has ordered a moratorium on all scheduled executions for the remainder of the year following a botched lethal injection procedure involving Christa Gail Pike. Pike, who was sentenced for a 1995 murder, remained alive after receiving two doses of the lethal substance. Legal representatives reported that the 50-year-old inmate was found snoring after the attempt and was subsequently transported to a medical facility for treatment. The execution had been cleared to proceed by the U.S. Supreme Court after an earlier stay by an appeals court was overturned. Experts have described the incident as an unprecedented failure in the state's capital punishment process. Pike would have been the first woman executed in Tennessee in over two centuries had the procedure been successful.
