Thailand is currently developing a mandatory regulatory framework for artificial intelligence, moving away from its previous reliance on voluntary guidelines. The Electronic Transactions Development Agency is drafting legislation that categorizes AI systems by risk levels, potentially imposing strict requirements on transparency, local data processing, and liability for both domestic and international firms. This initiative has drawn scrutiny from American technology companies, which argue that certain provisions regarding data localization and legal accountability could discourage foreign investment. As Minister Chaichanok Chidchob oversees the process, the government aims to protect public safety and individual rights without stifling the growth of the local digital economy. With the recent consultation period concluded, authorities are now reviewing feedback while navigating the complex intersection of digital trade relations with the United States and the need for a robust, modern regulatory environment for emerging technologies.
