Turkey has officially enacted a ban on social media access for individuals under the age of 15. According to the presidential Cybersecurity Directorate, this initiative aims to safeguard minors and ensure digital content remains suitable for younger age groups. The new regulations mandate that platforms verify the age of all new users via the national government portal. Furthermore, all existing accounts are required to complete this verification process by March 31, 2027. While authorities maintain that the system protects user privacy by preventing the disclosure of personal identities to social media firms, international observers like Freedom House have expressed concerns. They argue that these mandatory checks could further compromise online privacy and exacerbate existing restrictions on digital expression within the country.
