Two men, aged 25 and 27, have received prison sentences of 36 and 38 months respectively after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit secession. The defendants, Chan Tai-sum and Ng Chi-tung, were active participants in the Hong Kong Democratic Independence Union, a Taiwan-based organization that campaigned for local independence and international sanctions against Hong Kong. During the proceedings at the District Court, the defense highlighted that both individuals have been diagnosed with autism, with one receiving treatment since childhood and the other diagnosed during primary school. The pair admitted to their involvement in the group between November 2024 and July 2025. The organization was established by an individual currently living in self-imposed exile.
