Three Dubai International Academy students have created a sustainable solution for agricultural waste by transforming discarded chicken feathers into nutrient-rich biofertiliser. Through their project, BioFeathers, Adit Mital, Anushka Harlalka, and Maanit Misra utilize specific bacteria to decompose the feathers into plant-accessible nutrients. This initiative, which originated as a school science assignment, has progressed to active testing across sixteen farms and nurseries throughout the UAE, Oman, and India. The Year 13 pupils have already submitted a provisional patent application for their technology. Moving forward, the team intends to engage with Dubai government officials to explore scaling their waste-reduction method. The students were motivated by a desire to repurpose common industrial waste into a valuable agricultural resource, demonstrating the potential for student-led innovation to address environmental challenges.
