Recent statistics from the South Korean Ministry of Justice reveal that Vietnamese nationals constitute the largest group of international students overstaying their visas. Among those on D-2 academic visas, over 6,800 Vietnamese students remained in the country illegally, representing 68% of the total. The figures are even more pronounced for language trainees, where Vietnamese individuals account for nearly 90% of overstayers, totaling more than 19,400 cases. While South Korea has successfully reached its goal of attracting over 300,000 foreign students, concerns are rising regarding the management of these individuals. Critics argue that universities prioritize recruitment over legal compliance and student support. Experts suggest that financial difficulties and restrictive labor regulations contribute to the trend, urging the government to transition from strict monitoring to providing better career integration and long-term residency pathways for these valuable human resources.
