An armed assault in the Binnari community of Nigeria's Taraba state has resulted in at least 58 fatalities. The violence erupted on Friday during a local market day, with unidentified gunmen firing on residents and burning numerous homes over a four-hour period. Authorities reported that 15 additional bodies were discovered on Sunday in nearby vegetation and waterways. The tragedy was compounded when an overloaded boat, carrying individuals attempting to escape the violence, capsized, leading to further suspected deaths and missing persons. While the Taraba State government has initiated relief efforts for displaced families, no organization has claimed responsibility for the attack. The region has historically experienced instability due to ethnic, religious, and communal conflicts, as well as incidents of looting.
