Former politician Xavier Jayakumar has expressed significant reservations regarding the potential governance of Malaysia by the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS). Following the party's 72nd Muktamar in Kelantan, Jayakumar argued that the rhetoric displayed by party leadership suggests a primary focus on securing federal power rather than fostering an inclusive, multi-ethnic democracy. He highlighted concerns over the party's emphasis on Malay-Muslim unity as a strategic vehicle for political dominance. According to Jayakumar, this approach marginalizes non-Malay citizens, positioning them as subjects to be managed rather than equal participants in the national development process. Consequently, he remains unconvinced that PAS possesses the necessary vision to lead a pluralistic society effectively, fearing that their current ideological trajectory prioritizes sectarian consolidation over the needs of a diverse population.
