The Allahabad High Court has issued an order staying the murder conviction and life imprisonment sentence of Nandan Lal Rai, also known as Babloo Rai. The court granted this relief while considering his pending appeal against a 2025 Varanasi court ruling related to the 2017 killing of Pramod Kumar Nigam, an activist associated with the Ram Janmabhoomi movement. In its decision, the bench emphasized that a citizen's right to earn a living holds significant weight, noting that the suspension of the conviction is necessary to allow the appellant to sustain himself until the final legal outcome is determined. Rai has expressed intentions to participate in the forthcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, potentially as an independent or as a candidate for the Bharatiya Janata Party. The court's intervention provides him with the opportunity to pursue his political aspirations while his legal challenge remains ongoing.
