Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed the Federal Board of Revenue to expedite its internal reform process to address the national tax deficit. During a recent high-level meeting, the Prime Minister emphasized the necessity of integrating advanced technology, professional development, and increased transparency to improve institutional performance. While the government has abandoned plans to establish a separate tax agency, it intends to amend the Civil Servants Act. This legislative change will grant authorities the power to mandate the retirement of underperforming officials, facilitating a broader restructuring of the bureaucracy. Sharif highlighted that these reforms are essential for meeting public expectations and ensuring that the revenue collection system functions with greater accountability and efficiency. The administration remains focused on enhancing the capacity of tax authorities to close existing gaps in revenue generation.
