Senior Minister K Shanmugam expressed dissatisfaction regarding comments made by Syahganda Nainggolan, the head of Indonesia's Government Communications Agency. Nainggolan had suggested that Indonesia provides oxygen to Singapore and Malaysia when haze is not present, while also characterizing the recurring forest fires as a natural occurrence rather than a result of human activity. Shanmugam labeled these assertions as disappointing, particularly given the ongoing regional haze crisis. Despite this disagreement, the Singaporean minister commended the proactive measures taken by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in addressing the persistent issue of forest fires. Shanmugam emphasized that such remarks from the Indonesian official were inappropriate in the context of the current environmental challenges facing the region.
