The Atyrau Region Department of Ecology has initiated legal proceedings against the Atyrau Oil Refinery after an unscheduled audit revealed significant environmental non-compliance. Local residents had previously reported concerns regarding deteriorating air quality, prompting the investigation. Officials discovered that the facility failed to establish mandatory emission limits or perform necessary calculations for several processing units and storage tanks. Furthermore, the inspection identified that emergency gas flaring occurred on multiple dates between late August and early September, resulting in the release of over 100 tonnes of gas. These incidents were linked to unexpected shutdowns and technical repairs at the refinery's sulfur production and catalytic cracking units. The findings have been forwarded to law enforcement authorities for further action regarding the regulatory breaches.
