Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party intends to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Uttar Pradesh if it wins the 2027 state elections. This move aligns with a broader plan to introduce standardized laws for marriage, inheritance, and divorce across 21 states governed by the National Democratic Alliance by 2029. However, Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav dismissed the proposal, arguing against its necessity. The UCC seeks to replace diverse personal laws with a single legal framework for all citizens regardless of religion. Separately, the Madras High Court has requested responses from the central government and activist Saurav Das regarding a legal challenge concerning his nationality.
