A village leader in Chiang Mai has formally apologized after volunteers illegally felled 15 trees at a prominent viewpoint within the Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. Among the destroyed vegetation were 11 Thai sakura trees situated near a pavilion dedicated to King Rama IX at Ban Hmong Doi Pui. Local authorities have launched an investigation into the matter, identifying seven individuals suspected of participating in the unauthorized clearing. During a site inspection on October 26, subdistrict headman Methaphan Phuchakritdapa expressed regret for the incident and emphasized the community's dedication to preserving the area. He committed to collaborating with local residents and government agencies to establish better management protocols for this historically significant location, ensuring that future maintenance efforts are conducted appropriately and with official authorization.
