Danish director May El-Toukhy has highlighted systemic gender inequality within the film industry during the Venice Film Festival. As the sole female director of a fiction feature among the 21 Golden Lion contenders, El-Toukhy noted that securing financing and professional advancement remains significantly more challenging for women compared to their male counterparts. While festival director Alberto Barbera attributed the low female representation to the limited number of submissions, El-Toukhy argued that these obstacles hinder women's ability to reach major platforms. Her latest film, "Woman Unknown," explores themes of female invisibility and historical stigma in post-WWII Denmark. El-Toukhy expressed concern that despite increased awareness following the MeToo movement, the industry appears to be regressing toward previous patterns of gender imbalance, emphasizing the need for greater inclusion of female voices in competitive cinema.
