French historian Marie Favereau recently introduced the Kazakh version of her book, "The Horde: How the Mongols Changed the World," at the Kazakh National Academy of Sciences in Almaty. Her research challenges traditional Eurocentric historical narratives by presenting the Ulus of Jochi as a sophisticated and influential Eurasian power. Rather than viewing the Golden Horde as a mere footnote to Mongol or European history, Favereau highlights its distinct political structures, extensive trade networks, and multicultural social fabric. The launch event, held on September 8, was a collaborative effort involving the Academy, Steppe & World Publishing, and the French Embassy in Kazakhstan. This publication aims to shift the academic perspective on medieval Eurasia by emphasizing the internal autonomy and historical significance of the Mongol state.
