The India Meteorological Department reported that the southwest monsoon concluded with a 12.6% rainfall shortfall, marking the driest season in eleven years and the fourth lowest in the current century. Total precipitation reached 759.4 mm, falling short of the long-period average of 868.6 mm. The season commenced on June 4, three days behind the typical schedule, and achieved nationwide coverage by July 9, slightly later than the expected date. Regional data indicates that northwest India received 94.1% of its long-period average, while central India recorded 97%. This four-month period, which serves as a critical indicator for the nation's water resources and agricultural health, has concluded with one of the most significant deficits observed in recent history.
