The Indian government has informed the Supreme Court that it will not seek to renegotiate the 1974 and 1976 maritime accords with Sri Lanka. Attorney General R. Venkataramani stated that the administration prefers to address ongoing issues regarding Indian fishermen through diplomatic dialogue rather than legal challenges to existing treaties. During the court proceedings, the government emphasized that it lacks the authority to force Sri Lanka to alter its stance on the island's sovereignty or fishing regulations. The legal petitions before the bench aimed to contest the historical agreements that defined the status of Katchatheevu and restricted fishing activities in neighboring waters. Officials also highlighted the persistent problem of Indian vessels crossing international maritime boundaries, noting that such matters are currently being managed through established bilateral channels between the two nations.
