The Japanese government has formally requested that the United States improve disciplinary oversight of its military personnel stationed in the country. This demand follows the recent arrest of a US Marine on suspicion of driving under the influence in Okinawa. This incident occurred shortly after the implementation of a 30-day curfew and a temporary alcohol ban, which were enacted in response to a separate, high-profile murder case involving another American serviceman. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi emphasized the necessity for Washington to implement effective preventative measures to stop such misconduct. These recurring legal issues involving US troops have once again intensified public frustration and sparked renewed debate regarding the significant American military footprint on the island of Okinawa.
