Sarvajana Balaya parliamentarian Dilith Jayaweera has expressed skepticism regarding the government's proposal to build three expressways using local funding. He argues that the claim of avoiding foreign debt is deceptive, as domestic resources are derived from public taxes and local borrowing. Jayaweera highlighted that allocating two trillion rupees for this infrastructure project would necessitate either increased taxation, reduced public spending, or further local debt accumulation. He pointed to 2027 fiscal projections, which estimate government revenue at 5.8 trillion rupees, noting that the vast majority of these funds are already committed to interest payments, public sector salaries, pensions, and essential subsidies. Consequently, he warns that the strategy places an unsustainable burden on the national economy, regardless of whether the financing is labeled as domestic.
