Nepal has secured a $21.6 million grant from the UN’s Loss and Damage Fund to address the aftermath of the August 26 floods in the Trisuli Valley. While officials view this as a diplomatic success and a milestone for climate justice, the funding covers only 0.4% of the estimated $4.7 billion required for full reconstruction. Furthermore, $1.6 million is earmarked for administrative expenses, and the release of funds remains subject to further proposal approvals. Although some board members expressed concerns about setting a precedent for future claims, supporters emphasize the symbolic importance of the decision. The disaster, which left thousands missing and damaged significant hydropower infrastructure, has sparked debate regarding the extent to which climate change versus geological factors contributed to the catastrophe. The government must now submit detailed recovery plans to access the allocated resources.
