A breakaway group of the Trinamool Congress, headed by Ritabrata Banerjee, has announced its intention to refrain from running a candidate in the upcoming Nandigram Assembly bye-elections should Mamata Banerjee decide to stand for the seat. Ritabrata Banerjee expressed a preference for the party leader to secure her legislative position through this specific constituency. Although his faction had nearly completed the selection process for their own nominee, they are prepared to withdraw that individual if the party chief enters the race, even as an independent. This development follows a recent meeting between the Election Commission and representatives from both TMC factions, as both sides continue to dispute the rights to the party's official name and electoral symbol for the pending polls.
