Local government units in Siquijor are struggling to manage an accumulation of single-use plastic waste as tourism numbers rise. Despite active segregation efforts at the community level, existing storage facilities have reached capacity. During a recent forum, officials and environmental advocates highlighted that the volume of plastic packaging from major corporations exceeds local management capabilities. Participants emphasized the need for companies to fulfill their obligations under the Extended Producer Responsibility Act. Experts and stakeholders recommended implementing reuse and refill systems within the hospitality sector to curb waste generation. Furthermore, they cautioned against adopting thermal waste-to-energy incinerators, citing potential health risks, toxic emissions, and negative impacts on the island's tourism appeal. The Department of Tourism noted that sustainable waste management is essential to preserving the natural environment that continues to attract an increasing number of visitors to the province.
