Sri Lanka has set a goal to welcome five million international visitors per year by 2030. Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath announced this target during the introduction of a new tourism development strategy in Negombo. To support this growth, the government intends to bolster the Tourist Police by increasing personnel and granting the unit broader legal authority through legislative changes. This specialized force will operate with a structure separate from the standard police department. Minister Herath highlighted that maintaining national economic and political stability, alongside a peaceful social environment, is vital for the sector's success. The initiative marks a significant step in the nation's ongoing efforts to revitalize its tourism industry following previous challenges.
