A recent report from the Sri Lanka Railway Department indicates a significant decline in operational capacity, with only 50 out of 98 engines currently functional. To maintain standard service levels, the department requires at least 74 engines, a figure that has dropped from the 53 available earlier in 2024. The situation is similarly dire for power sets, which are essential for commuter transport; only 118 of the 242 units are active, falling well short of the 193 units needed for regular operations. Railway trade unions report that these equipment shortages have resulted in frequent service cancellations and persistent delays. Furthermore, the unions have criticized the General Manager of Railways for allegedly failing to address these recurring technical issues and maintenance challenges effectively.
