Sri Lanka Railways has commenced a renovation project for three S11 train units, partnering with the Government Factory Department to execute the repairs. Each train is allocated a budget of 25 million rupees for the overhaul. This initiative, launched this year, seeks to enhance operational capacity and alleviate maintenance pressure on the Ratmalana Main Railway Workshop. Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena visited the Maligawatta Railway Yard on October 23 to oversee the progress of the work. The refurbishment includes replacing the original fibre front panels of the Indian-made trains with new stainless steel versions. Officials anticipate that the first unit will be fully restored and ready to resume passenger service by January.
