The Supreme Court of India has demanded an explanation from a Greater Noida executive magistrate for issuing a legal notice to a student who participated in the Jantar Mantar protests. Chief Justice Surya Kant expressed surprise at the action, noting that the court had previously issued a clear directive prohibiting penal measures against students involved in these demonstrations. The bench, which included Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana, emphasized that their September 1 order under Article 142 had already closed criminal proceedings related to the Cockroach Janta Party protests. Although the specific notice demanding a personal bond of ₹5 lakh was subsequently revoked, the court insisted on accountability for the magistrate's decision. The student, Akshat Tripathi, maintained that his participation in the protest was peaceful and unrelated to his university attendance.
