Transboundary haze continues to disrupt daily activities in Singapore, frequently pushing air quality levels into the unhealthy category. While the environmental crisis impacts neighboring nations like Malaysia and Singapore, Indonesian citizens face the most severe health consequences due to significantly higher pollution levels. The primary drivers of this recurring issue are forest fires located in Sumatra and Kalimantan, with the latter region currently identified as the main source of the smoke. These conditions are exacerbated by a powerful El Niño event, which is expected to reduce rainfall across Southeast Asia in the near future. This lack of precipitation hinders efforts to suppress the fires and clear the atmosphere. Experts indicate that human activities and corporate practices are the fundamental causes behind these widespread forest fires, which remain a persistent challenge for the region.
