Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) has initiated contempt of court proceedings against former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and four high-ranking former health officials. The legal action follows their failure to settle court-mandated payments amounting to 275 million rupees. This financial penalty originated from a March 2026 Supreme Court ruling, which determined that the respondents infringed upon the constitutional right to equal protection regarding medical procurement processes. Under the original judgment, Rambukwella was ordered to pay 75 million rupees, with the remaining balance assigned to the other officials. TISL filed the contempt application on October 12, citing deliberate non-compliance with the judicial directive. The organization maintains that adherence to court orders is essential for accountability in public administration, particularly concerning cases involving substandard medical supplies.
