A federal court in California has sentenced two Chinese citizens, Liren Lai and Yuance Chen, to 30 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release. The individuals pleaded guilty to conducting clandestine intelligence operations on behalf of China’s Ministry of State Security. According to the United States Department of Justice, the defendants attempted to recruit American military personnel to act as intelligence assets. Their activities included gathering sensitive information regarding national security, military installations, and personnel, as well as facilitating covert cash payments for classified data. This sentencing concludes a case involving efforts to compromise United States military security through the solicitation of service members.
