The United States and its coalition partners have officially ended Operation Inherent Resolve, a military campaign initiated in 2014 to combat the Islamic State. Following the territorial defeat of the group in Iraq in 2017 and Syria in 2019, the mission has transitioned to a new phase. According to the Pentagon, Iraqi security forces, including those in the Kurdistan region, will now assume primary responsibility for suppressing remaining extremist elements. While the combat mission has concluded, the U.S. intends to maintain security cooperation through targeted intelligence and training support. This withdrawal aims to reduce regional friction, particularly concerning Iran-aligned militias, as the Iraqi government works to consolidate state control over armed factions. The move represents a significant shift in the bilateral relationship, moving toward broader diplomatic and commercial engagement while Washington continues its commitment to counterterrorism efforts in the region.
