The Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the Iranian ambassador to Tashkent on October 23 to deliver a formal protest. This action followed social media posts by various Iranian diplomatic missions that described Samarkand’s heritage as exclusively Persian. These posts were a reaction to comments made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his visit to the city, which itself followed a diplomatic dispute between Rubio and Tehran regarding historical narratives. Tashkent emphasized that the cultural legacies of its historic cities represent the multifaceted development of the Uzbek people and their statehood. The ministry characterized the Iranian interpretations as one-sided and politically motivated. Consequently, Uzbekistan has requested the removal of these online materials and urged Iran to avoid the politicization of historical topics, while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining respectful bilateral relations.
