The government of West Bengal has initiated the closure of 252 unaided madrasas following a comprehensive survey conducted in July. Officials determined that these institutions failed to meet mandatory state requirements, including standards for classroom dimensions, student-to-teacher ratios, and adherence to the prescribed academic curriculum. Furthermore, approximately 100 additional madrasas have received show-cause notices and face potential shutdown if their explanations regarding these regulatory lapses are deemed inadequate. Data indicates that the affected institutions are distributed across several districts, with significant concentrations identified in Malda, Uttar Dinajpur, South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, and Nadia. This administrative action follows a state-led effort to verify the authorization and operational compliance of unaided religious schools within the region.
