Alvin Hellerstein, a long-serving federal judge in the Southern District of New York, has died at the age of 92. Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1998, Hellerstein was known for presiding over significant legal matters, including litigation stemming from the September 11 terrorist attacks, the fraud trial of Bill Hwang, and the narco-terrorism case involving Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. A graduate of Columbia Law School and a former military lawyer, he was recognized for his meticulous courtroom management and his habit of reflecting on the gravity of sentencing decisions through the lens of his faith. Chief Judge Laura Swain praised his enduring commitment to the judiciary, noting that he remained active until his passing. Following his death, the various high-profile cases currently on his docket will be reassigned to other judges through a random selection process.
