The Colombo High Court has rejected an appeal submitted by Bodu Bala Sena General Secretary Ven. Galagoda Aththe Gnanasara Thera, effectively maintaining a nine-month jail term previously handed down by a Magistrate’s Court. The conviction stems from remarks made during a press conference that were determined to have incited friction between the Muslim and Sinhalese communities. Originally sentenced on January 9, 2025, the monk was also ordered to pay a fine of 1,500 rupees. The High Court’s ruling was delivered on Wednesday, with the defendant present under prison escort as he is already incarcerated for a different legal matter. Legal representatives for the monk were present during the court session as the judicial decision was finalized.
