The documentary Mast Mahila Mandali, or Cool Ladies Club, features a unique production approach involving eleven female directors. Led by experienced filmmaker and academic Shilpi Gulati, the project brought together ten working-class women from Mumbai’s M East ward to document their own lives. Rather than focusing on traditional tropes of sorrow, the participants used the camera to explore themes of ambition, happiness, and self-perception. The project serves as a platform for these first-time filmmakers to articulate their identities and share how they wish to be represented in society. By centering their own voices and conversations, the group produced a documentary that emphasizes joy and personal agency, marking a significant departure from conventional portrayals of women in cinema.
