A Hong Kong magistrate has found Dow Jones Publishing guilty of violating labor regulations by attempting to stop former Wall Street Journal reporter Selina Cheng from leading the Hong Kong Journalists Association. While the court ruled that the publisher interfered with Cheng's right to hold a union position, it acquitted the company of charges related to her termination in July 2024. Cheng, who currently serves as the chair of the press union, initiated the private prosecution following her dismissal. During the proceedings at the Eastern Magistrates’ Courts, legal representatives argued that the company's actions infringed upon her professional rights. The ruling marks a significant development in the ongoing legal dispute between the journalist and her former employer regarding labor rights and union participation within the local media landscape.
