Hong Kong health authorities have introduced stricter monitoring for passengers arriving from Russia following the death of a laboratory worker in Siberia. The individual, employed at the Irkutsk Antiplague Research Institute, passed away on October 2 after being hospitalized with severe pneumonia. The World Health Organization confirmed that the patient had been suspected of contracting pneumonic plague due to potential workplace exposure. While Russian officials have informed the global health body that there have been no documented outbreaks of plague or biosecurity breaches in the area, the Centre for Health Protection in Hong Kong has opted to increase surveillance measures as a precautionary step. The situation remains under observation as international health agencies continue to monitor reports regarding the incident and the potential risks associated with the laboratory environment in Irkutsk.
